1- In what ways did European exploration and colonization affect Native Americans?
2- What conditions existed in Europe that helped to promote the exploration and settlement of America?
3- Study the maps in this chapter of the text. Based on these, what do you feel was the impact of the English arrival in North America? Why did the English system prevail in this region? What other factors contributed to English success here?
The American natives were very vulnerable to European diseases such as measles, smallpox, and typhus, which were never exposed to them, so they had no immunity to fight it off. This epidemic quickly spread leading to near extinction to some tribes. The decimation of the people was not only a result from infection and sickness but a “deliberate policy of extermination and subjugation”. Although it was devastating to the natives it was a triumph for the Spanish. Spanish settlers in America only had interest in the gold and silver, exploiting the “New World”, and becoming wealthy. They also started to claim land and establish there own civilizations in America. A few things that actually benefited the natives was when the Europeans introduced important new crops like sugar, bananas, domestic livestock, and the most important was the horse. These things actually transformed their societies and their way of life. I think the European explorers definitely affected the native people in many harsh ways and in changing their lives, sometimes it was beneficial but most times not for everyone involved.

For question number one:
ReplyDeleteI think that the Europeans really dominated and destroyed the culture, language, and religions existing in Native Americans. Not only did they take over their land, money, and free will, but they obliterated all their unique attributes; the Europeans settled in North and South America and overruled any empire that stood in their way, but in doing so, changed the culture of the native people. Furthermore, English was a foreign language to the natives before the English (such as Columbus, Cabot, and Hudson) came. Not only did they completely wipe out their language and cultural ways, but they altered the natives’ beliefs and religion and converted them over to European faiths and customs. Their exploration and colonization was done selfishly and cruelly in the way they eliminated every cultural faith, tongue and free will.

2- Some conditions were the fact that America hadn’t been explored yet, so people were curious to know what the new land was like and what they could gain from it. Another reason was, America provided land. England was running out of land to grow crops on because they were using their fields for sheep. The Americas provided a place to own land for farming. Also, people had different religious views and America was a place that wasn’t ruled by a king, so people felt free to join any religion and not feel judged by others or afraid that they would be in trouble for not being the right religion. But mostly, America provided new opportunities, opportunities to live freely, not under a king, and live in an environment where everyone felt equal.

The Europeans affected the Native Americans in many different ways. For one, the Europeans would over power the Indians because of their vast technology. (The Europeans had guns, while the Indians only had bows and arrows, and spears.) When Europe’s men arrived, they not only brought their guns and hunger to take over, but different diseases that quickly spread over the Natives. The Indians were not immune to these diseases so most died. The Europeans took charge of the lands of America and controlled most of it.

Question 1
ReplyDeleteThere are many different ways the Europeans affected the Native Americans. Most of which did not help them but only hurt them. When the Europeans first came over to the Americas they brought diseases and illnesses (like smallpox) that the Indians had never faced. Because of this many Indians died of illness or disease. The Europeans also used the Indians as their slaves. Since they had more advanced tools they used them to help them collect things like gold. Many Europeans killed Indians or conquered their tribes.

2-There were two main reasons that helped permote the exploration. One was the growth of the population. The Black Death killed a lot of people. The population then rebounded. There was a demand for more things.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason was the new governments were stronger. They wanted to the development of their nation.
Those are the conditions why Europe wanted to explore.

It says in Europe Looks Westward that "Europe in the middle ages was to weak, divided, and decentralized to inspire many great ventures." Then after it said that the changes were different and there exploration had grown. So in my words they were doing bad and got their crap together to get explorers going west to the new world. Which means there was no problems at the major time just before.

Answer to Question 1
ReplyDeleteThe Europeans definitely influenced how the Native Americans would live their lives, forever. They took away their land. Because so many people were immigrating to the New World, they needed more space. The Europeans claimed the Natives’ land as their own. Because the Europeans took away the Native American’s land, it changed especially how they hunted and ate, and also how they lived their everyday lives. Since Europeans believed in slavery, they used the Natives as slaves. This not only affected the Natives’ rights, it also affected their health. The Native Americans were not immune to the sicknesses that the Europeans brought with them. It also hurt the upcoming generations. The Native people were treated as if they were worthless and worthless is how many of them felt.

I think that European exploration and colonization had a huge affect on the Native Americans. The Europeans; took their land, in some cases took over or destroyed their empire, took them back as captives, exposed them to foreign diseases, took their gold, and completely changed the way they lived. When the Europeans and the Natives were at peace, they traded items and taught each other the ways of their culture, such as religion and new techniques for survival. Therefore, making it so it not only had a bad effect on the Natives, but a good one too. But think about it, this had to happen, whether it happened in the 1400-1600s or a 1000-10,000 years later, it was going to happen.

Question 1-
ReplyDeleteThe European exploration completely changed how Indians had previously lived. In some ways good, and some ways bad. The Europeans brought in disease that none of the Native Americans had been immune to, so lots of them died. They took the Native Americans back as slaves, which (because of diseases) also killed many of them. Some of the ways it changed were good though. Europeans brought in horses, cows, sheep and other farm animals. They also brought in new plants for the Indians to grow and eat. Because of Europeans explored America, the lives of the Indians were changed

Uhhhh…. It is kinda akward to be the first post. I am in the right area, right? So I decided to answer question number one. In what ways did European exploration and colonization affect NativeAmericans? I think that when the Europeans invaded the Native Americans’ home land it had a huge effect on them. Strange people were coming in and taking their land , causing diseases ( although I don’t know if they knew it was the Europeans), and making them into slaves. Sometimes the Natives could be helpful, but that didn’t change what was happening. We (the Europeans) still took most of their land away, and not to mention how many of them we killed. I think that sending people over to the Americas really truly did have a HUGE affect on the Native Americans.
ReplyDeleteWhen the Europeans first came to “The New World” they brought along new innovations and illnesses to the natives. Although the English brought over cattle, such as sheep, pigs—which provided a new food source—and horses that helped in the native societies, the consequences of the illnesses the Europeans brought west to the Americas were catastrophic to the natives. A few of these illnesses include influenza, measles, and most importantly small pox. Since the Native Americans were not immune to these illnesses as the Europeans were then, their numbers quickly dwindled: Conquistadores, such as Cortez and Pizarro—who mostly came to conquer the natives’ riches—thought of their dwindling numbers as a sign of God to destroy them.

Based on the map in the book, the information given shows us that England had a much better plan than Spain and France. The impact the English made on North America was great. It was so powerful, that it made the Spanish and French explores look like they barely explored anything. The English prevailed in the region because they had a good strategy. England sent their men along the East Coast, the West Coast, around the Hudson Bay, and in the Caribbean Sea. Since the English explorers were so spread out it made it possible for them to claim twice the amount of land. Another contributor, is the fact that English also stayed in North America for a long time. Which allowed them to get accustomed to the land and people. I think that Spain and France could have used a better strategy to claim more land. They also should’ve spread out more, instead of grouping together.

When the European came to the New World they thought no one else lived here, but Native Americans did. The Aztecs are these fearless, mighty, wild natives and when the Europeans came in their armer and on horses, which they've never seen those types of horses in their life, they were afraid. The Europeans took over the Aztecs and told them they had twenty-four hours to fill up a large room full of gold or they would kill everyone. The Aztecs were so scared of them that they filled a room of gold in three to twelve hours, they did it as fast as they could. After that all the Eropeans thought they were at the top of the world, they thought they owned the natives, which became a problem to the natives.

When the Europeans decided to explore and settle in the Americas they had main reasons why they wanted to go there. Those conditions helped “promote” them to go to the Americas. The Europeans had no idea that the Americas existed. They had made contact with the natives there. The natives told them about the rich deposits of gold and silver. Ever since then the history of the Americas increased in exchanges. The Europeans also focused on exploiting the new world and its peoples and calling them savages. They wanted to destroy their societies and replace them with European culture. Smallpox and other diseases made it easier for the Europeans to take over the tribes there.

The question that I picked to answer is number one; In what ways did the European exploration and colonization affect Native Americans? From what I read, the European explorations were usually not good for the Native Americans. The explorations were not good for the Native Americans because firstly, the Europeans brought over diseases that they were immune to but the Native Americans were not. Then once the disease was spread it would start to kill off whole tribes, because their immune systoms could not handle the diseases. One example of this is when Cortez inffected the Aztecs with Small Pox. Another reason that the European explorers were bad for the Native Americans was because the Europeans had better weapons that the Native Americans. So then when they got in fights(which happened often) the Europeans could totally defeat the Native Americans and the Natives didn't even have a chance from the beginning. Another reason that the Europeans affected the Native Americans so badly is because they would show up and think that the land was theirs. So according to the Europeans that meant that everything on the land was theirs, too. The Europeans then would end up taking all of the Native Americans gold, silver, and anything else with any value. Even though this was a dark and scary time for the Native Americans, the Europeans did not know that they were doing anything wrong. Because the Catholic Pope had said the land was theirs, the Europeans thought that everything on the land was theirs. Even though this was not the best part of our history, I am glad that it happened because now we won't-or at least shouldn't-make the same mistakes ever again.

ReplyDeleteWhen the Europeans came to America they found the Native Americans living here, and used them to their advantage. The Native Americans were robbed of their gold, silver, and precious things. Not only that, but they were captured, tortured, and taken as slaves. The Europeans soon found the Native Americans had no immunities to diseases such as smallpox, measles, influenza, and others diseases. Millions were affected. Many tribes were demolished in just a few decades of meeting the white men. This was probably the biggest affect on the Natives. These people were also killed in war against the Europeans, and most were driven from their native land. There was also intermarriage – The Europeans and the Natives mixing. Most of these marriages were forced. These are some of the many ways the Native Americans were affected by the Europeans exploration and settlements.
(#1) Here are some ways that European exploration affected Native Americans. To begin with, the Native Americans didn’t have as good immunity as the Europeans. So, when they show up, they end up giving diseases to the Indians, such as: influenza, measles, typhus, and the highest of them all… the smallpox. Millions of people died from this! Plus, they were brutal to them. But they also benefited from the Europeans. They learned new agricultural techniques, and were introduced to new kinds of crops. Livestock—cattle, pigs, and sheep—were another thing Europeans had introduced. So, as we can see, there were both cons and pros to European exploration.

European exploration and colonization made a big difference on the Native Americans. Many Indians were forced to become slaves. The European treated the Indians with little or no respect. Millions of Native Americans died some native populations were completely wiped out within the first two decades of the fist contact with whites. Not all of the differences the Europeans made were bad though. They also introduced many new and helpful things to the Native Americans such as the horse. The horse helped the lives of many Native Americans and transformed their societies. The exploration and colonization of the Europeans made positive and negative influences on the Native Americans.

The funny thing is, is that I always thought that columbus discovered america so when I was reading this it was just a little weird. But I chose question number one. I think when I am reading this that it wasn't very good to the Native Americans because when we came we brought deseases and their systems couldnt handle that. I also think it through them off a little because here comes a lot more people coming to live in their land. And the weapons were much more advanced so if they wanted t they could kill all of them. But I think it help them too. I mean i am sure they learned a lot more from the other peopel. So that is what i got out of it. I think having them come had a huge toll on them.

European exploration greatly affected the Native Americans both good and bad. To have strangers come and take your land is not the best thing to happen to you. I'm sure the Native Americans were furious. The Europeans brought diseases unknown to the new land. But, the Europeans weren't ALL bad. They brought livestock to help. They also helped them with new techniques. They brought crops to use as well. In the end, it wasn't the best thing that happened to the Native Americans, but honestly it benefited in other ways.

Answer to number two…
ReplyDeleteWhat country sells a TON to other countries, and buys hardly anything from them? Well, England in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
Mercantilism was the idea that a whole country could get wealthy by selling lots to other countries, and buying hardly anything from them. One of the reasons that starting new colonies in America became popular was that they were a source of raw materials to make goods to sell to other countries. But after a time, this plan started to collapse.
Well, it affected them because as the Europeans started to arrive, and settle in the New World. They disrupted the Native Americans ways of living. By spreading disease such as Fever and Chicken Pox, Smallpox, Measles and Typhus, while these are common diseases with the Europeans, they were not so common with the Native Americans. These sickness epidemics had sometimes destroyed entire Native villages. The reason why these diseases affected the Natives so badly is because they had didn’t have the proper immunities built up to fight off these disastrous diseases.
ReplyDeleteNot only did the diseases that they had brought over kill them. But the Europeans just generally killed them too. They had dominated the culture, and destroyed villages for they’re settlements. They wiped out the Natives beliefs, in religion, language, and they way that they had lived. I bet it had devastated them. With all these strange happening going on. I mean how you would feel if foreigners with “Boom Sticks” just came to your house speaking a whole different language. Giving you sicknesses that you’re Medicine Man couldn’t heal. I would feel freaked out. I would be terrified. And I bet that’s the way that the women, children, men, and chiefs had felt about the Europeans coming to the New World. And that had to have affected the Natives in ways that could never have been changed.
The European explorers affected the Native Americans in many ways. They traded tools and weapons to the Indians for food and other supplies they needed. The European explorers also brought over lots of diseases and sicknesses that killed many Native Americans. The settlements took away lots of land that belonged to the Native Americans, and this caused some Indian tribes to battle against the settlements.

Mr. Pollock please take a chill pill. It isn't that important
ReplyDeleteThe Europeans affected the Native Americans in many ways.
ReplyDeleteThe first time that the Europeans made contact with the Natives, they spread disease. The Natives did not have the Immune Systems' for them.
There were not very many European women, so the men had kids with the Native women. Increasing their numbers greatly.

The European explorers brought disease and illness to the Natives which affected their population. The Europeans waged war and thought the Natives were savages and took their land away from them. But the European explorers also introduced the Natives new crops, cows, and horses. The horses became very important to the Natives.

When the Europeans came to the New World they brought over their sicknesses, and since the Native Americans weren’t used to them, they got sick and died. Some of the Europeans traded things with the Native Americans such as guns which changed their way of hunting and getting food. brooke clark
