BLOG POST NUMBER 5- PERIOD 1- only

Please respond to the post before Saturday, January 22, midnight

1- Why did the Constitution replace the Articles of Confederation?

2- Why were the Ordinances of 1784 and 1785 helpful in the development of the West?

3-Explain the "Great Compromise" and it's importance?

30 comments:

  1. The great compromise was when the founding fathers made every state happy. The larger states wanted to represent themselves by how many people lived in their state (population). The smaller states just wanted the votes to be equal, because it was not fair for them to only have two representatives while the larger states get forty-six representatives. There was the problem, that they couldn’t agree on anything. The founding fathers then combined those two ideas to make a good idea which was called the "Great Compromise". If our founding fathers didn't come up with this we might be in war right now. The "Great Compromise" was the answer to world peace. (Which didn't last very long because we are in war right now.)

  2. The Great Compromise was a very important event in history. The people all wanted a different form of government. The larger states wanted thought that they should determine how many representatives a state had by its population. The smaller states didn't want this because they felt that they would be outvoted. The Great Compromise ended this disagreement by combining them. There would now be two houses of government. The Senate consisted of only two senates from every state. In the House of Representatives, each state had a certain number of representatives based on their population. If they had a larger population, then they had more representatives. This was very important because it fixed the way the government worked, and got us to where we are today. We still use this same form of government.

  3. The Great Promise was a huge step in forming the American Government. Without this we would not have the government we have today.
After the Articles of Confederation were destroyed we needed a new system to govern ourselves. They came up with an idea called the Virginia Plan. This plan said there would be two houses. Each state would get a number of representatives based on there population. The larger states loved this idea but the smaller states were having big issues with it.
So they came up with the New Jersey plan. This plan said that there would only be one house and each state would get the same amount of representatives, no matter how big or how small the state was. This idea was soon disregarded because the larger states felt it was unfair.
After this things weren’t looking too good. But soon enough they came up with the Great Promise. This said there would be two houses. The first house, called the Senate, would have state representatives based on population. The second house, the House of Representatives, would have and equal amount of representatives for all the states. This finally satisfied everyone.
As you can see, without the Great Promise we would not have the government that we have today.

  4. Before the “Great Compromise”, the smaller states were mad at the larger states because the larger states wanted to represent themselves by their population. The smaller states thought this was unfair. So the founding fathers made up the great compromise. It called for two-house legislature. The lower house and the upper house. In the lower house, the states would be represented by the population. The slaves would be counted as three –fifths of a free person. While the upper house would be represented equally with two members apiece. This way all of the states would be happy. The smaller states thought this was fair too. On July 16 of 1787, the convention agreed to accept the compromise.

  5. The Great Compromise was added after The Virginia Plan and The New Jersey Plan. The Virginia Plan was that everyone got one vote in a state. But bigger states had the upper hand. This plan was not fair for smaller states. The New Jersey Plan was that only one person could vote once for the whole state. This plan was not fair for the bigger states because small states had less population, so the smaller states had the upper hand. So Benjamin Franklin and a delegate from each state decided on a new plan on July 2, 1787. This plan was called the Great Compromise. This plan used a two-house legislature. The smaller house members were elected based on population while the upper house got two members from each state. On July 16, 1787, the convention voted for the compromise. The Great Compromise was important for the U.S. because this meant no state, big or small got the upper hand.

  6. The Articles of Confederation were replaced by the Constitution because in the Articles, the government didn’t have an executive or judiciary department. The government wasn’t allowed to tax the states. The problem was they needed the tax money. The tax money would be the only way to pay back state and national debt from the Revolutionary war. Congress replaced the Articles of Confederation with the Constitution. The new government started in 1789. All in all the Articles of Confederation lacked the necessities for a successful government.

  7. Question number 1:
The Articles of Confederation was a bad constitution for the following reasons:
There was no power to impel states to pay taxes--it was totally voluntary. Each state was sovereign--the federal government could not force the states to obey federal laws or programs. There was no president of the United States. Since each state was sovereign, foreign countries had to actually make 13 treaties or trade agreements with the U.S. rather than one. It took ALL thirteen states to approve any changes to the Articles of Confederation. There was no national military under the Articles of Confederation. Other nations did not take the United States seriously since we were not united at all. Finally, the Second Continental Congress occurred. They got together and made the Constitution. After presenting the New Jersey Plan and the Virginia plan, they made the Great Compromise. The larger states wanted to be represented by population, while smaller states wanted the votes equal. So, the Great Compromise makes it so each state is represented in Congress.the Great Compromise solved the problem of repersentation for smaller states by having Congress have two senators for the Senate and proportional representation in the House of Representatives, based on population of the state.

  8. The Great Compromise was when everyone agreed with all the rules. There was many arguments that happened between the 13 states but in order to make all of them happy they had to come up with a compromise. Before all of this started people were complaining that the bigger states had more power. Meaning that Virginia had more people so more votes than compared to Rhode Island because Rhode Island had less land therefore less people. The small states were very angry that they didn’t have the same power as the bigger states. In order to make everyone happy they had to come up with something that would make the big and little states. The compromise was to have only one vote from each state making it fair for everyone. If the founding fathers did not come up with this Great Compromise we would not be a state that worked with each other and we wouldn’t be the 50 states that we are today. By having this compromise it was the answer to many problems and made it able to have world peace.

  9. The Great Compromise was extremely important. Our founding fathers were trying to create the right type of government for our new country. There were two plans that were suggested in thinking up the right government. One plan was the Virginia plan and the other was the New Jersey plan. The Virginia plan proposed that the government have a bicameral legislature, bicameral meaning two houses, and have the states send representatives by the population of the state. The smaller states opposed to this plan because they wouldn’t be able to send as many representatives as the larger states because they had a smaller population. The New Jersey plan on the other hand, would only consist of one house and each state would be able to send one representative. The bigger states opposed of this plan. The Constitutional Convention decided to combine the two plans to satisfy both the larger and smaller states. They would have the legislature be bicameral with one house having representatives from population, and the other would just have one representative from each state. As you see, the Great Compromise was very important! It created the government that we have today!

  10. The "Great Compromise" was a great importance to our county at that time. The Articles of Confederation was our form of government before this. Many people soon found out that it was not working and it needed to change.
The first plan proposed to everyone was the Virginia Plan. This plan consisted of three branches of government, Legislative, Executive, and Judiciary. Every state would get the amount of votes according to their population.
The smaller states didn't like this plan so they came up with the New Jersey Plan. In this plan there was only one house to control everything. Each state would then get equal representation.
The nation was divided between these an neither side would give in. That is when the Great Compromise was given. This was a dividing line in-between the two plans. In this there is a two-house legislature. In the lower house, the states would be represented by population, just like in the Virginia Plan. Then in the upper house every state would get an equal two votes, as in the New Jersey Plan.
The Great Compromise let every one get what they wanted. Both sides were happy. It is important because without it there would be a lot of contention. The people would fight over what they would do. This could end up in division or war.

  11. How was the Great Compromise establish? Before there was the Virginia plan which was where each person in the state got one vote. The bigger states liked this idea because they always won. However the smaller states hated this idea because they always lost because they didn't have as much people as the bigger states. Thethey came up twith the New jersey plan. This plan was where the states no matter how big or small go equal amount of votes. But again people weren't happy about this. The big states thought since they have more people then the smaller states and being treated equally with the smaller states. To make everyone happy they came up with a new solution called the "Great Compromise". This Was a solution where each state got one vote but they got several more depending on the population. We still use this today we have representatives that do this for us. The Great Compromise was the perfect solution to our problems.

  12. The Great Compromise was a big settlement between two disputers. The larger southern states wanted to be represented by their population, and the smaller states farther north wanted an equal amount of representatives no matter the size of the state. There was a lot of controversy over this subject, and the sessions often went for days over the same subject of representatives. They finally ended the controversy by coming up with the Great Compromise. It stated that there would be two houses, one called the House of Representatives where the representatives were chosen by the population. The second house, or the Senate, gives an equal amount of representatives.

  13. The Great Compromise was established when our country was still trying to find our official type of government. There was great debate over what plan we should go with out of two different proposals. The first was the Virginia plan. This was where there were three branches of government and each state got one vote no matter what the population was. The other was the New Jersey plan. This was where the executive branch got all the power, and each state still got one vote. No one really liked the voting system in either plan. They fought over which plan to adopt for our country for a long time. Finally, they came to the Great Compromise. This is where we have three branches of government: executive, legislative, and judicial. Also in the great compromise, they resolved the voting problem so that every state had equal representation according to their population. The only exception was that every slave counted as 3/5 of a vote and every white man counted as one whole vote. The great compromise was important because it is the same government that we use today.

  14. The Great Compromise was basically what formed our government. The Great Compromise basically was that the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan combined. They couldn’t decide what to choose between plans. So they decided to combine them. You see the Virginia Plan basically said that there was an executive who took care of one part of the government’s responsibilities and then there was the lower houses one of which, the Senate, was divided into two and each state got votes according to population. The New Jersey Plan was that each state got one vote. So they made it so that in the Senate in the top house there are votes according to population and the lower one has two votes per state. This kind of formed our government, and made the whole US thing possible.

  15. The “Great Compromise” was important because it brought our country together. In the 1780’s, after numerous economic problems and being unable to deal with Shay’s Rebellion, our Founding Fathers realized that the Articles of Confederation weren’t going to work with our nation. They decided to start from scratch and do something that would work for everyone. Representatives from all states but Rhode Island went to Philadelphia. After weeks of debate and deciding that neither the Virginia Plan nor the New Jersey Plan would work for both the small states and the large states, they came up with the “Great Compromise”. It had a two-house legislature. The upper house would give each state two members to vote. The lower house would give representatives based on population. It worked well for big and little states and it made our homeland all one big country, not just a bunch of loosely tied states.

  16. The Articles of Confederation weren’t adequate enough to hold the nation together. Here are some reasons why:
    1) There wasn’t any separation of authority.
    2) The central government was too weak because the states had most of the power.
    3) Congress didn’t have the power to tax, so they couldn’t keep their finances organized.
    4) To change the Articles, the states had to approve, so changes to the Articles were impossible.
    5) For any important laws to be passed, they had to be approved by 9 of 13 states.
    6) Congress didn’t have the power to control trade which caused fighting between states and political problems.

  17. The "Great Compromise" was when the founding fathers helped settle a voting issue between the larger and smaller states. The larger states all thought that it would be a good idea to have voting rights due to population. The bigger the population the more votes you get, but the smaller states disagreed because that wouldn’t be fair to them. The smaller states wanted the same amount of votes per state. The “Great Compromise” was when the founding fathers combined these two ideas. These ideas put together went something like this; it was a two house legislature. In the lower house the states would be represented by population, the slaves were counted as 3/5 of a free person, in the upper house the states would be represented with two members per state. This compromise helped make every state happy, which helped the peace be within our new country.

  18. The Great Compromise is an agreement from the delegates to the Constitutional Convention that decided that the American government would have two houses in Congress. The first house is the senate, where each of the states is to have two senators. With the two senators in each state, then every state has equal representation. The second house is the representatives, where each of the states has a number of representatives based on the population of the state.
The delegates made this decision of making Constitutional Convention because there was a big issue with the Articles of Confederation. In the Articles of Confederation, proposed a one house national legislature with representatives that are selected by the state legislatures. And each state will be able to cast only one vote. With that, made the small states concerned. So they did the Great Compromise, which creates our legislature with two houses (based on the population of the state and elected by the people) and the other house allowing two senators for each state being appointed by state legislature.
Why The Great Compromise is so important? Because without The Great Compromise, then maybe we wouldn’t have the constitution or the US government as we know it today. Without it,then the delegates to the Constitutional Convention would break apart.

  19. The Constitution replaced the Articles of Confederation because the people needed a better form of government where no state was too powerful. They needed a government that could over power one state but not so that it was like a king. They needed to make sure that the central government could be able to act in the interest of everyone not just one state.

  20. The Great Compromise was a compromise between the thirteen colonies pertaining to the legislative branch of the government when they were making the Constitution. There were two plans made; the Virginia plan and the New Jersey plan. The Virginia plan was to have the number of people in the legislative branch be determined by how many people are in your state. The larger states with more people liked this plan but the smaller states didn't. The New Jersey plan was to have the number of people in the legislative branch be equal. For example, all of the colonies have 2 representatives in the branch. What the compromise was was to have two branches of the legislature. The first one was the Senate and it was more powerful and followed the New Jersey plan. The second one was the House of Representatives and it followed the Virginia plan and was less powerful. Every state was happy with this agreement and so that is what we use for our government. Utah currently has three people in the House of Representatives, and all the states have two people in the Senate.

  21. The Great Compromise was made to try and make all the states happy. Before the Great Compromise was made however there were two other plans that were considered. The Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan. The Virginia Plan was based on a bicameral idea. It was also all about the population of each state and gave supreme power to the central government. This was not fair to the smaller states, so it was not accepted. The next Plan, the New Jersey Plan said that each state could only have one vote, making it unfair for the larger states that had more people. The Great Compromise was a mix of the two plans. There are two houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate has two representatives from each state that are able to vote. The House of Representatives is based on the population of the state--the more people, the more representatives. This compromise was so important because it was one of the first attempts at self-government that worked and kept the peace between states.

  22. The “Great Compromise” is the settlement between the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan. It made compromises between the two plans, helping the government and all the states. After many heated debates amongst delegates, they finally came to an accord. Oversaw by Benjamin Franklin and one delegate from each state, they produced a new offer of the basis of the “Great Compromise.” This consisted of a two-house legislature, the lower house and the upper house. In the former, the states would be represented on the basis of the population. With that, the slaves would be counted as three-fifths of a free person in determining the basis for both representation and taxation. In the latter, the states would evenly be represented with two members respectively. This convention was later accepted on July 16, 1787. This form in government has continued helping pass essential laws since its initiation.

  23. The “Great Compromise” was an important form of government that ended a strong disagreement in 1787. It was a combination of the Virginia plan and the New Jersey plan. The Virginia plan was to have everyone be represented by population, which made the larger states happy. But the smaller states didn’t want to be outvoted and they came up with the New Jersey plan. It was to have only one house representative and to have one vote per state. This pleased the smaller states, but not the larger ones. In order to make both the larger states and the smaller states happy, they combined the two. It called for a two-house legislature with two representatives per state. This “Great Compromise” made both the larger and smaller states happy, ending many arguments.

  24. The "Great Compromise", was a huge debate between the colonists. They wanted a stronger national government, but the colonists were afraid that if one man had power, he would be like the King of England, and they didn't want to deal with that again. Fifty-Five men, representing all of the states except Rhode Island, attended conventions that discussed the possibilities for their national government. Almost all of the delegates agreed that the United States needed a stronger central government, but their agreement ended.
James Madison, a delegate from Virginia, had a plan for the new national government. He proposed that they would have two legislature houses, in the lower house; states would be represented according to their population. The members of the upper house were elected by the lower house under no system representation. The delegates from the bigger states agreed with this, but the members from the smaller states didn’t.
William Paterson from New Jersey offered an alternative plan. He proposed that they have a one-house legislature and all states had equal representation, which would have given Congress more power to tax and regulate commerce. The people at the convention, rejected Paterson’s plan, but they also realized they had to give the smaller states more representation. There were many questions that were left unresolved. One of the most important was slavery. The main question was would the slaves be counted as part of the population?
The delegates argued for weeks. On July 2, the convention produced a proposal which later became the “Great Compromise.” It was a two-house legislature; the lower house would be represented as the basis of population. Each slave was counted as three-fifths of a free person for both representation and taxation. In the upper house, the states would each have two votes. On July 16, 1787, the convention accepted the compromise.
The Great Compromise is very important. It allows us to have a national government that doesn’t have too much power. Separating the power into three branches lets us keep our power in order. The Executive branch passes bills, the Legislative branch writes the bills, and the Judicial branch enforces them and uses the court system. If we didn’t ever make the Great Compromise, we would probably be forced into a system that was unfair, but since we have it, our powers are equal.

  25. The great compromise was the final agreement that finalized our country. To satisfy both small and large states our founding fathers agreed to give two votes to every state. Then a state could receive more votes by population. At first, James Madison proposed the Virginia plan. This gave the larger more votes because they had more people. The smaller states such as New Jersey Rhode Island etc. so they came up with a new plan. They called it the New Jersey plan. This plan gave each state only one vote. This plan of coarse made the larger states unhappy. They needed to strike a compromise. They came up with the great compromise. The great compromise pulled good ideas from both plans. This settled the argument and made both sides happy.

  26. Question 1-
In the beginning, when we a brand new nation, we initiated the Articles of Confederation. Then why did we change it to the constitution? Well, to answer this question, we must tell the whole story. During the establishment of the United States, people did not want a government ruling over them, after the last incident with the King of England. To prevent this from having this they decided to just have a loose set of rules about them and let each state make up the rest for the population. They soon found this did not work. There was chaos everywhere, and nothing was going right. So the people got together once again, just to tweak it a little. What ended up happening is they started all over. Out of this the constitution we know today was organized. Our government is how it is today because of this.

  27. The “Great Compromise” was a very important step to becoming a successful nation for all of the states. It contained ideas from New Jersey and from Virginia. Virginia’s idea was to have a bicameral government based on the population and the money contributed. New Jersey idea was that they would have one house of government and each state will vote for one legislature. Rhode Island and New Jersey didn’t like the idea from Virginia. They didn’t like how there would be bicameral government, and that it all depended on the population of your state. The bigger states like New York and Virginia thought that the New Jersey’s plan would be unfair because they could only have one vote per state. New Jersey and Virginia both rejected each other’s plans. After days of arguing, the States came to a decision. The states would combine both of their plans together and ‘compromise’. The Great Compromise consisted of multiple houses. The states would vote on a representative to go to the houses and report on what each State needed. That is why the Great Compromise was an important step to becoming a successful nation for all of the states.

Thats the whole reason why they seperated from the king. So it would make no sense. Thats why the choose that the constitution replaced the articles of confederation.

  30. The Great Compromise was an agreement. In America, to decide what to do we had congress. Representatives from each state made up congress. Two parties, each with a different plan, had very different ideas about how many should go to congress. The Virginia plan, which favored the larger states, wanted the number of representatives to be based on the poulation of the state. The New Jersey plan, which favored the smaller states said onloy two representatives from each state should be sent, regardless of the poulation. The compromise was there were two houses. One, the senate, is only made up of two representatives from each state. The other, the house of representatives, has more or less representatives based on the poulation. I think this was an excellent resolution.
