Not sure how this will work. I will read these when I get bored staying up late.
Show me you are thinking. Show me you are understanding HISTORY.
I will post questions. You will make some remark.

I am hoping for a good YEAR... what will you make of it?

I worked night and day for twelve years to prevent the war, but I could not. The North was mad and blind, would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war came.

  3. I didn't know much about Jefferson Davis..so i looked him up to see if i could understand this quote a little bit better. This is what i found:
Jefferson Davis started out as the U.S. Senator for Mississippi. In 1861, Jefferson decided to resign from the Union. He went on to be come the "provisional President of the Confederate States of America. (I didn't know what that was either, so i looked it up as well. It's meaning is the President of the South if it were to split from the Union.) After reading some more, i came to the conclusion that this man was not made out to be a President. It listed many reasons why he was not popular including his temper, his lack of responsibility, and neglect of civil matters. Davis was captured on May 10, 1876 and charged with treason. Although he wasn't the best at what he did, he was still a Civil War hero to Southern people.

  4. I think it means, that you can't stop war by yourself. You have to have a big group. A city. A state. The United States in general, to stop a war. You can't just do everything you can and think its going to stop. Working together would be the answer.

  6. In this Quote, Jefferson Davis is talking about the Civil War. From the way he talks, you can infer that he is on the South's side. He says in this quote, "The North is mad and blind." What I would like to know is if he knew the North's situation(s). I think it is important that we understand situations or people to our highest ability, and then we judge them. I think if we can all try to be better at doing this, life would go smoother, and there wouldn't be as much drama as there is now.

  7. Well.... Uhh I'm not exactly sure what I am supposed to do. But... What this quote means to me is that. Jefferson is thinking about the war and what more he could have done to prevent it.

  8. I think that Jefferson was bothered by the fact that our country was fighting with itself, and just wanted some freedom as well as peace and quiet. Those battles in the Civil War were pretty violent. It was horrible.

  9. These quotes illustrate the beliefs of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, and most southerners of his time. During the first half of the nineteenth century, differences between the northern and southern American states created divisions between residents of the two regions. While the South's economy relied heavily upon slavery and traditional ways of life, the North worked toward abolishing slavery and establishing a progressive economy. These differences eventually led to the secession of several southern states in the early 1860s and then to the Civil War.

  10. Maybe he is saying that the war wasn't the Souths fault but the Norths fault for being mad at them for no reason. Just like the sentence in that quote, *The North was mad and blind, they would not let us govern ourselves*. But that's just me.

  14. It is all about perspective! The North's point of view on slavery was that it was barbaric and that we should abide the laws of the Constitution. I can also see the South's point of view because they were trying to preserve their life-style. They couldn't do it on their own. Did they execute it the best possible way? No, but they didn't know that. Jefferson Davis was just trying to get Congress to see their point of view and to just leave them alone. He said he was trying to get the legislature to see their view for 12 years! I would get a little tired of it and also I think that they felt picked on because they wanted to govern themselves.

  15. I think this blog is a really cool idea! I was excited to read other peoples comments on things about themselves. It gave me a chance to get to know all the other students in the eighth grade and hopefully you will learn something new about me!:) One of my favorite things to do is to travel the world. I have been too many different places. I have been to: Hawaii, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Japan, Guam, London, Mexico, Bahamas, Philippines, Canada, and New York, Washington D.C, Virginia, Florida, and other states. The reason why I love traveling is to explore different cultures and their ways of living. I love trying new things like: foods, transportation, and I especially cannot wait to go sky diving when I’m older. I am always the daredevil in my family. I am always the first to try new things like jumping off a cliff. I am the second oldest in my family. I have and older sister, younger brother and sister and twin little brothers. They were a HUGE surprise to my family. I love playing sports like: basketball, soccer, volleyball, and I love watching football and rugby. I love hanging with friends, playing video games like Halo and Call of Duty. I love laughing and joking around with other people. I’m very outgoing and fun to be around. I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m the next president!!! :)

  16. Just as a guess...Jefferson Davies lived in the south because in his quote he said, "....The North was mad and blind...." I'm assuming he wouldn't call himself "mad" or "blind".
I did some research and I learned that he did live in the South. I also found out that he was the President of the Confederate U.S.
I'm guessing that what he ment by saying, "All we ask is to be left alone" is that the South just wanted the North to mind their own business and let them do what they wanted to do.

I am also excited for this new blogging idea. It will be interesting to see other students point of view on the topics. Anyways for my first blog I would just like to tell you a little bit about myself! My name is Sisilia Tausinga, I am the youngest of three. My brother goes to Bingham and my oldest sister is graduated. I love to play all kinds of sports especially volleyball, basketball, snowboarding, and occasionally a little golf with my daddy. Disneyland is probably my favorite place to travel to, my favorite ride there is the buzz light year one. When it comes to food I love eating anything and most everything especially new foods! My most favorite is Otter Pops! On the weekends I enjoy going to see new movies or staying home and watching some good old classics. I also enjoy listening to music really loudly. I love my family and my friends. Well that’s about all I can think of to share so there you go. I can’t wait for a wonderful year in Mr. Pollocks class.

  19. I think that Jefferson had a very good point when he said that they just wanted to be left alone. He probably felt like the North was controlling them to much and acting like the mother more then treating them like citizens of a nation. I think that there were mistakes on both sides. He says that he worked on preventing the war for 12 years but in reality it takes way more than one person to stop or prevent a war.

  20. my favorite line in this quote is "the north was mad and blind." im pretty sure that the south agreed with him.
im also pretty sure that the north thought the same about the south.
when i was reading in my history book,i found that the reasoning behind the north not wanting slavery was because they were afraid that it would spread west and that the whites would be slaves to them. it makes me wonder, if the north would have explained that to the south before they just said, no more slavery, then maybe there wouldn't have even been a war.

  21. I think that Mr. Davis is saying that he wanted the war not to happen so bad that he would give a big portion of his life to stop it. He also says that the south didn't want the war--they just wanted to be left alone, and that the north was angry, but they should be, because the south were keeping slaves. What he says in the last line "and so the war came" makes me think that he's really sad and hates doing his job as president of the confederates.

He lives in New York with his wife, Melissa, and there couple month year old daughter, Sophie. Andrew (20) is attending Salt Lkae Community College, he is intrested in becoming an enginer. And my sister Megan (17 almost 18 in October) is attending Bingham High School as a Senior. She is interested in becoming a History Teacher. My Dad works with my brother Andrew at Gecko's Mexican Grill. My dad has had health problems in the past, like in 2007 my dad was diagosed with Cirrosis of the liver, the doctors told my family my dad had had it since he was 2 years old, with my dads last week alive, he recieved a liver, and has been better since. And my Mom is a medical coder, and shes a Mom. I don't see her much, because of her job. My dog Toby is a Golden Retriever. He is 9 years old, and this year we found out that he has bad hips, or something like that. But that is common for Golden Retrievers to have bad hips. You heard enough about my family, now me, I was born in Vancouver, Washington. I lived there for 3 years. Then unfortualy I had to move to Utah. I don't like the heat, I like colder weather, but not snow, it is all about the rain! You would think after all theses years I would be use to Utah, but I'm not. I enjoy cooking/baking, hanging out with my friends and family, coloring, writing, relaxing, not having any homework, going to Washington and Oregon, etc. I help my family with a ton of things, my brother Andrew calls me his little slave, and I am almost as tall as him. I help My Mom with her church calling as Activity Day leader and My Dad with his church calling as Stake Men/Boys Athelic Director. So most people in my stake have to see me way to much and way to early in the morning. And that is pretty much about me!!!

  28. I think what Mr. Davis wanted was to have his own state or country type thing that he could run himself and be able to do whatever he wanted with what he could get. Slavery was probably one of the major things that he wanted to keep happening. The North wanted that to stop obviously... And i can see why there couldn't be a compromise. the people in the north who didn't have slaves and were paid to work would be out of a job if their bosses could just buy people to work for them forever for free.

  41. At this point the U.S. is still pretty new. There were still major flaws, like the fact that a whole new "section" popped up in the country. Forming pretty much into its own country, the Confederate States of America. Which Mr. Davis was elected to be president of. Like Mr. Pollock was talking about in class they lost that feel of nationalism. Mr. Davis had the beleif that every state had the right to govern itself. Which is true, but only to a certain point. If states had total freedom...we wouldnt be one nation, which is what happened. I don't beileve that the civil war was started completely on slavery, but more on clashing beliefs of two types of societies.

"The North would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war came." This is the part of the quote I based this off of. To me it shows that the North wanted one Nation. The south a nation within a nation. Which can't last long.

The way Davis talks is like the North is oppressing the freedom of the South, but that is not what happened. What happened is that the North and The South needed each other more than they knew. The North needed the food and cotton to feed the people and run the textiles. The South was needing the politics, and the infrastructure that the North had. The queries remind me of that Dr. Seuss story "The Zax" were they wouldn't move at all. They were so stubborn.

In the part where it says “would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war came,” I think what Jefferson Davis is trying to say is that if the people don’t let the government rule, then a war will start. So I looked for more information. I found out that there were arguments and there were discussions about the states’ rights and the federal rights. He fought against the Union. I found out that Jefferson Davis was a strong proponent. Jefferson Davis tried to prevent the war, but he couldn’t do it by himself. In the part where it is says “The North was mad and blind,” I think the word mad, is like saying that the Northern are crazy. The word blind, is saying that the Northern are not thinking that it might affect the future. The North wants to gain more powerful in slavery and I think the South are afraid that the North might get more power over slavery. So there was a problem over slavery. Another is the Economy.

Jefferson Davis was the President of the Confederacy and he led the Confederacy the whole time that they existed. I guess that Davis was trying as hard as he could to prevent the war from starting. In the quote it sounds like Davis tried to settle the conflict between the Union and the Confederacy. He said that the North was mad and blind so it sounds like the North, or Union, wasn't cooperating with the South to try to settle down the conflicts. Also, Davis said "All we ask is to be let alone." That makes it sound like the North was bothering the South about stopping slavery. Apparently, slavery was not the only cause of the Civil War, but I think in this case Davis is talking about slavery.

Jefferson Davis was the president of the confederate states of america and i thought what he was trying to say was that he was trying to make sure the war wasn't going to come and for me i think he was kind of blaming it on the north because he says in the poem that the north were mad and blind about what the south had to think about slavery.Jefferson Davis just wanted the north to leave the south alone, to let them have slaves and let them do whatever they wanted to do and whenever the south wanted to, but like he said they weren't. Jefferson Davis worke for twelve years to prevent the war,but he couldn't.

  78. Jefferson Davis was born on june 13, 1808, in that portion of Christian country,Kentucky. His grandfather rendering important services. His father, Samuel Emory Davis and his uncles were all Revolutionary soldiers in 1776. Samuel Davis surved partly with Georgia Calvalry and was also in the seige of Savannah as an officer. Three brothers of Jefferson Davis, all older then himself, fought in the war of 1812, two of them serving with Andrew Jackson.
This is what comes to mind when in read this, "All I ask is to be alone" is that your mad and all you want to do is be alone. The other one i think of that he worked alot so there wouldnt be a war but it didnt work they still had one adn he hated how the north treated them.

The quote on the top made me think that he was a man who wasn't a work crazy but that he was very concerned for our country and wanted to change it. He worked often for long amounts to try to make that change happen to help our society. It also sounded like to me he was more on the souths side, because he said the north was mad and blind. There was a statement from the LDS church that said things about allowing people to choose their religion freely. It said that because of this, the book should not be burned. I agree with that because we have freedom of religion.
I just found out that he partially wants to do this because of the building of a Mosque on Ground Zero. He said that he would cancel the burning if they would move the building of the Mosque to a different location.

  93. It seems to me that the Southern reverend's idea of Islam as evil and anti-American is rather mistaken. He seems to think that all Muslims must hate the United States and what it stands for, which is not true. The 9/11 attacks were the work of Islamic extremists who view America as a threat to their faith. However, a large portion of Muslims worldwide disapprove of such terrorist actions. Therefore, I believe that the reverend should not attack Islam by burning their holy book or in any other way.

  98. So I read somewhere that the reverend was going to stop the burning. Then out of the blue, it said somewhere that he says he lied about stopping it. Why not just save the guilt trip later, and not lie about stopping the burning. I don't think he should burn it, because of the freedom of religion. On the other hand, he happens to have freedom of religion, so he can burn it. All this stuff about freedom of religion is confusing me. We should just say you can have your faith, but don't do anything to provoke other religions. I love my religion, so I can see where people will protest, and I also know that if anyone were to burn my book, then i would also protest

  99. I don't think that that reverend guy who was burning the Quran had any right to do it. he may not agree with what they have to say and that is totally ok. No one is telling him to join their church. Besides there has already been a war of religion. With the mob and the Mormons. They didn't have any right to do what they did then and they especially don't have any right to burn the Quran. People should respect others no matter what religion they are from or attend however you want to put it. On the other hand we do have freedom of speech and the right to do as we may choose. (There are consequences to everything though) If that man wants to burn their book people should let him do it. If you burn their book it doesn't change how the people act and it doesn't change what the believe in. They will just have to keep making more of their religious books. besides as long as they aren't stealing the books then it doesn't even hurt the believers of that faith because they will still have their books that they read from. It is very rude and disrespectful. I must admit.

  100. To me, what Davis was saying is, the South saw nothing wrong with slavery. They thought it was just fine to own other men, make them work day in and day out with nothing in return but a small meal, once, maybe twice a day. However the North saw it as a terrible act. They wanted it stopped. Davis then goes on to say, "The North was mad and blind, would not let us govern ourselves, and so the war came." The North would not let the South be. They would not let them treat other men the way they were treating the slaves. They would not let them go off and form their own country. The North wanted to hold onto the South and never let them go, they wanted to stay a country..."and so the war came." In order to have the Constitution, that we live by now, the Civil War had to happen. It had to happen so all men could be created equal, and be treated like it too.

  102. As I was reading the question, “In what ways did the European exploration and colonization affect the Native Americans?” I was thinking that the better question should be, “How didn’t the Europeans affect the Natives?” Imagine, you are a Native, you’ve lived in North America your whole life, then, all of a sudden some white man comes along, and tells you that he wants to start a new colony. He also tells you that he’s going to take you back to his home land, and have you work as a slave! I can only imagine how the Natives felt. However, this isn’t even the beginning of the Natives worries. The Europeans brought diseases with them that the Natives weren’t immune too. So disease wiped out about half of the Native population. But, for me the worst part is that the first colony, Roanoke, wasn’t even successful! So the Europeans went to all of this trouble for failure. But I do give them credit for trying; otherwise, we might not even be here.

  103. It’s true that in The United States we have the freedom of speech, but just because we can say whatever doesn’t mean we should, or we should at least be sensitive to other beliefs. Kalie has a good point. Why didn’t the the Reverend burn the Koran nine years ago when nine eleven happened? How would the Reverend feel if someone said they would burn the bible? I don’t think he would be very happy about that. The Government is saying that because of what the Reverend is saying the Muslims hate us even more and want to send more bombs. It is also making other places not like us as much. So I think he can have freedom of speech, but at least be nice about it, and not say he is going to burn the Koran. He is just bringing a lot of attention to himself.
